Temple Beth-El, a medium-size Conservative synagogue in beautiful Birmingham, Alabama, is seeking a Music/Education Director to help fill our hearts with song and our community with Judaic learning.
We need someone who can comfortably “wear both hats.”
We’ve been going through a strategic visioning process, and one message that came through from our community loud and clear is that music is important. We’re looking for someone who can maintain and expand our successful “Shabbat Ruach” program, a monthly Friday night service with musical instruments, singing, food, and a great spirit. We’re looking for ways to bring music into additional services and programs.
The education side of the job involves running our religious school, having primary responsibility for getting our children ready for bar and bat mitzvah (our senior rabbi works with the students on their d’var Torah), being responsible for all our youth programming for kids from tots to teens, and providing instruction to adults interested in learning Hebrew, trope, or how to lead prayers.
Since we have a small staff, the Music/Education Director needs to be a “self-starter” with ideas, energy, and a willingness to fill in wherever needed (for example leading services or reading Torah).
About Temple Beth-El: We’ve been around since 1907; we’re fully egalitarian with strong traditions and open views. We support a twice-daily minyan and have a culture of strong lay support for service leading (minyan, Shabbat, and holiday) and Torah and Haftorah chanting. We proudly support the Keruv Program and actively include and welcome nontraditional families. We have a small but dedicated group participating in USY, Kadima, and overnight Jewish camps. We’re big believers in the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim, which we call “Southern Hospitality.”
About Birmingham, Alabama: Situated in the Southern Foothills of the Appalachians, Birmingham is green and hilly with mild winter weather and year-round outdoor activities. Our metropolitan area of over a million people enjoy museums, entertainment venues, local theater, sports teams, a symphony, and a vibrant “food culture.” We boast world-class healthcare, affordable cost of living, and excellent public and private schools.
Our active Jewish Community includes four synagogues, chavurot, the NE Miles Jewish Day School (grades K-8), Collat Jewish Family Services, Birmingham Jewish Federation, Levite Jewish Community Center, and more.
